Chamonix Winter/Spring Skiing (Basic Version)
On January 25, 1924, the first Winter Olympics were held in Chamonix. With its prime location near Mont Blanc and exceptional natural conditions, Chamonix began developing into a major alpine skiing destination as early as 1879. Today, it boasts 10 ski areas with a total of over 150 kilometers of slopes. In 2030, just six years from now, the 26th Winter Olympics will return to Chamonix.
Chamonix features 10 ski areas, all conveniently connected. The most famous of these are Grands Montets, Balme-Vallorcine, and Brévent-Flégère.
Grands Montets:
Located at altitudes between 1,235 meters and 2,800 meters, Grands Montets offers some of the world's largest vertical drops, with slopes adjacent to the Mer de Glace glacier. It has a total of 29 kilometers of slopes, half of which are black runs, with 9 kilometers of red runs, and the remainder blue and green runs, making it ideal for intermediate to advanced skiers.
Balme-Vallorcine:
Situated at the top of the Chamonix Valley, bordering Switzerland, this area offers wide, gentle slopes facing the Chamonix Valley, as well as a snow park. Closer to the Swiss border, there are dense fir forests to navigate through. The ski area covers 29 kilometers, with half of the slopes being red runs and the other half blue and green runs, offering diverse terrain perfect for intermediate skiers.
Brévent-Flégère:
Located on the sunny side of the valley, these slopes offer stunning views of the Mont Blanc range and are just 3 kilometers from the town center. The ski area spans 56 kilometers, with half of the slopes being red runs, along with evenly distributed black, blue, and green runs. At Brévent: near the starting point of the Cable Car 2000, there is a freestyle airbag area with five tracks, supervised by ESF instructors, making it a safe place to practice. At Flégère: near the La Chavanne run, there's a special speed trap slope for those seeking speed and excitement. The variety of slopes makes this area suitable for skiers of all levels.
Chamonix attracts skiers not only with its numerous on-piste runs but also with its expansive off-piste terrain! The distribution of slopes is well-balanced, and they are well-signposted, so you don’t have to worry about getting lost while skiing off-piste. These excellent conditions provide ample opportunities for off-piste exploration. The varied terrain of forests, glaciers, canyons, and streams continues to attract skiing enthusiasts from around the world year after year. In addition to the off-piste areas within the ski resorts, there is also Vallée Blanche, the world's top off-piste route, waiting for you to explore! Descend from the 3,842-meter summit of the Aiguille du Midi, traverse the white wilderness, glide over glacier crevasses, pass the Requin Hut and distant villages, covering a total of 22 kilometers before returning to Chamonix town. The Mer de Glace glacier will serve as the final highlight of this off-piste adventure. It’s an exhilarating white feast and a true alpine skiing experience.

Aiguille du Midi:
The renowned Aiguille du Midi is also located in Chamonix. You will take the world's highest vertical ascent cable car to the summit at 3,842 meters. At the top, you'll witness how humans have conquered the mountains, and how the mountains gradually melt away.
Mer de Glace:
The Mer de Glace glacier is a valley glacier located on the northern slope of the Mont Blanc massif. It is 7.5 kilometers long, 200 meters deep, making it the longest and largest glacier in France, and the second largest in the Alps. From Chamonix, you can take the Montenvers - Mer de Glace (glacier train) to the viewing platform. In addition to enjoying the glacier scenery, you can take a cable car or walk down the steps to the man-made ice cave to experience the interior of the glacier.
