The Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) is universally recognized by hiking enthusiasts as one of the world's top ten classic trekking routes and has been named one of the world's 20 Dream Trails by National Geographic. The full circuit around Mont Blanc spans 160 kilometers, so thorough preparation is essential before embarking on this adventure. Today, a seasoned hiker who has completed the TMB numerous times and resides in Chamonix will share what makes Chamonix the best base camp for the Tour du Mont Blanc and highlight its top attractions.

Chamonix-Mont Blanc

Chamonix, the best base camp for preparing to trek the Tour du Mont Blanc, is located at the intersection of France, Switzerland, and Italy. Renowned for its magnificent glaciers, towering peaks, and world-class ski resorts, it is hailed as a world-class tourist destination. Therefore, when people talk about Chamonix, they always use the highest praise. For those who have not yet visited Chamonix, here are some must-see attractions that will leave you with unforgettable memories.

Aiguille du Midi

One of Chamonix's most famous tourist attractions, Aiguille du Midi, stands at an altitude of 3,842 meters and has the highest cable car in the world since 1955. From the center of Chamonix, it takes only 20 minutes to reach the summit. Standing on the viewing platform, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view, overlooking the largest glacier in Western Europe and Mont Blanc. On clear days, you can see Mont Blanc glistening in the sunlight.

The most thrilling experience at Aiguille du Midi is the "Step into the Void," a glass room that makes you feel like you're suspended in mid-air, offering breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains, blue skies, and glaciers. Looking down through the glass floor is a truly unforgettable experience.

If you're interested in mountaineering history, visit the Alpinism Museum, the highest museum in the world. Aiguille du Midi is not only the starting point for climbing Mont Blanc but also a place marked by the footprints of countless mountaineers. In the museum, you can learn about these adventurers' heroic deeds and watch videos of ice climbing and mountaineering.

In summer, Aiguille du Midi is an excellent starting point for exploring the highest peak in Europe. A cable car will take you from Aiguille du Midi to Gros Rognon and then to Pointe Helbronner at an altitude of 3,462 meters, which is the border between France and Italy. From here, you can continue by cable car into Italy and finally reach the town of Courmayeur.

This spectacular 5-kilometer, 30-minute journey across the Mont Blanc range offers views of Geant Glacier, icefalls, crevasses, and the unparalleled beauty of the Mont Blanc mountains. This route operates from May to September, weather permitting, so plan your visit on a clear day to experience this magnificent journey.

Some Tips:

► The cable car ride from Chamonix town center to the top of Aiguille du Midi takes only 20 minutes, but on clear days, it can be crowded, so be prepared for a long wait. The entire tour takes about 2 to 3 hours.

► In high-altitude areas, especially at the top of Aiguille du Midi, temperatures can drop to freezing or below even in summer. The summit can be windy, so visitors are advised to wear windproof jackets and suitable enclosed shoes to stay warm.

► In high mountain areas, the sunlight is particularly intense, and the perennial snow can cause snow blindness. It is recommended to bring high-quality sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV rays and glare.

Mer de Glace

Mer de Glace is the largest glacier in France, stretching 7 kilometers long and 200 meters deep. Chamonix has become famous because of this glacier. In 1741, two British explorers, William Windham and Richard Pocock, first documented the spectacular sight of this glacier, putting Chamonix on the map. Every year, countless visitors come to marvel at this natural wonder.

To visit Mer de Glace, start your journey by taking the historic Montenvers Railway. This cogwheel train departs from the Montenvers station in Chamonix town center, ascending the mountain with a historic rumble. As the train climbs, the view of Chamonix gradually shrinks and eventually disappears from sight. The train stops at an altitude of 1,913 meters. From here, follow the signs to the viewing platform, where Mer de Glace appears before you, like a tranquil maiden, leaving all viewers in awe.

At the viewing platform, you can dine at Le Panoramique Mer de Glace restaurant or enjoy a hot drink on the semi-circular viewing terrace while admiring the dreamy glacier. The platform also offers excellent views of Chamonix's famous peaks: Les Drus (3,754 meters), Les Grands Jorasses (4,205 meters), and Aiguille du Grepon (3,482 meters).

For a deeper exploration, continue from the Montenvers train station by taking a short cable car ride to a stairway platform, then descend over 400 steps to a massive natural ice cave. This ice cave preserves the lifestyle of local residents from the early 19th century, waiting for you to explore. Since the ice cave has a relatively short open period, it is recommended to visit it first.

On the other side of the viewing platform, you will find the Terminal Neige - Refuge du Montenvers hotel. Established in 1880, this hotel offers authentic Savoyard cuisine. You can dine on the terrace while enjoying the view of Les Drus peak. The hotel blends history with modernity, providing 9 rooms and two dormitories, making it perfect for a few days of tranquil mountain stay. Additionally, you can hike back from Chamonix via the mountain trails through Les Planards or Les Bois village, which usually takes 2 to 3 hours, longer during peak times.
